Security Measures

Security Measures provides an assessment of the capabilities related to security (i.e., cargo theft during transportation).

Similar to Pharma Quality Management, the assessment considers relevant certificates
and capabilities of logistics service providers. In addition, the assessment evaluates parking stops in road freight, as they are considered to increase security risk.

A classification is identified for every process step individually, except for flight legs. The algorithm first evaluates the availability of the following certifications:

TAPA Certification, which is the certification provided by the Transported Asset Protection
Association.
Regulated Agent (RA) or a third-country Regulated Agent (RA3) certification, which is a
certification that is part of the European Union aviation security validation program. This
program aims to ensure that all cargo carried to the EU is part of a secure supply chain.
C-TPAT, which is the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, is a voluntary supply-chain security program led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection focused on improving the security of private companies' supply chains with respect to terrorism.
ISO 28001 Certification (Security Management Systems for the Supply Chain).

Consequently, the classification is determined as outlined below, whereas the availability of capabilities is translated into classification as specified in Table 7.

In case certifications are available:

If there are at least 2 certificates available, the assessment for this step is classified as Excellent.
If either TAPA, RA(3), C-TPAT, or ISO 28001 certified, the assessment for this step is classified as Very Good.
The availability of Core Security Capabilities is used to calculate the final score.

In case no certifications are available:

Below 60% of available Core Security Capabilities, the step is classified as Basic.
Between 60% and 100% of available Core Security Capabilities, the step is classified as between
Basic and Excellent, based on a linear translation.

The overall Security Measures Classification is calculated by taking the average of all suppliers.

Country Security Risk provides an evaluation of the risk associated with both the origin and destination countries of the lane. It takes into account various factors such as operational risk, infrastructure risk, crime rates, unrest, war likelihood, and cargo theft incidents. The assessment culminates in assigning a risk score of High, Medium, or Low to each country.

High Risk: it indicates significant potential threats across multiple aspects of security. This might include high levels of crime, ongoing unrest, infrastructure vulnerabilities, or even active conflict or war situations.

Medium Risk: it suggests a moderate level of security concern. While not as severe as a High risk rating, countries with this designation still exhibit notable security challenges. These could range from sporadic incidents of crime or civil unrest to some infrastructure vulnerabilities.

Low Risk: they are considered relatively safe and stable in terms of security. They typically have lower crime rates, stable political environments, robust infrastructure, and minimal risk of conflict or unrest.

In cases where the origin and destination countries have different risk scores, the worst-case scenario is chosen to ensure that the highest level of caution is exercised throughout the entire journey.

In cases where the origin and the destination countries have the same risk score, Validaide will show the origin country in the lane risk assessment.

Factors Affecting Country Security Risk:

Cargo Theft Rates: Higher cargo theft rates indicate a greater risk of pharmaceuticals being stolen and potentially exposed to improper temperatures.
Road Transport Infrastructure: Developed road networks offer more potential routes for theft compared to less developed ones.
Value of Pharmaceuticals: Countries with a larger pharmaceutical trade volume or focus on high-value products might be more attractive to criminals.
Organized Crime Presence: Developed countries often have a higher presence of organized crime groups with the capacity for sophisticated cargo thefts.
Political Stability: Political instability can create additional security challenges for supply chains.
