Duration and Complexity provide an assessment of the total duration and overall complexity of the lane.
This information may provide an indication of the risk of delay on a lane. The assessment is equal to the average of the following elements:
The buffer between the lane and the target duration.
For each Lane, a target duration can be defined (i.e. qualified performance duration of packaging
solution). Once this number has been defined, the system computes the difference between the total
transport duration and the target duration. The more buffer (h) is available, the lower the risk of delay.
The following formula is applied to classify the buffer:
Number of legs
For each Lane, the number of legs is determined. One leg is defined as a process step during which the cargo physically moves from A to B using a specific mode of transport (air, ocean, road). It is assumed that more transfer points and transport legs increase the risk of delay. The following formula applies to this classification:
On-time flight performance
For every flight, we assess the on-time flight performance score as provided by FlightStats*. This score is based on actual delays and cancellations for a particular flight code:
FlightStats provides an indicator between 0 and 5 based on these values. This indicator is then translated to a classification between Basic and Excellent in Validaide as follows:
World Bank Timeliness Index
This information is provided by the World Bank Logistics Performance Index for Timeliness**. It gives an indication of the frequency with which shipments arrive at the consignee within scheduled delivery
times, hence providing an indication of the risk of delay due to customs clearance procedures. The index is identified for the destination country (the country in which the last flight lands), and rates between 1 and 5.
Final Score
The final score for Duration and Complexity is equal to the average of the four data inputs, calculated
using normalized scores. However, on-time flight performance is not available for every flight, hence if
said rating is not available, the classification is based on the remaining three information elements only.

The overall Duration and Complexity Classification is calculated by taking the average value of all suppliers.
